Critters!
If it walks, crawls, slithers or buzzes,
chances are you'll see it here!
But hey, it's their home we're visiting--we're glad they let us in!

     GATOR BAIT GALS!
Here's Darla and Sharon in front of the Alligator Sign at the Ichetucknee Head Springs.   The sign says "possibility" of alligators--well, if they didn't have any gators, why would they put up the sign???

Darla's Favorite Song in high school was 'Poke Salad Annie"...so here are some special cartoons just about that!

Twenty feet away from where we were swimming at Devil's Eye, Darla spotted this snake sunning himself on the water lettuce. RD got close enough to take this picture. It looked like a water moccasin, but we didn't get close enough to ask it what it was! On a nice lazy warm day on the river, the gopher tortoises come out to lay in the sun.

Here's a nice shot of a carp Tom took underwater at Devil's Eye.  Altho hard to tell from the picture, this "little" fish is almost a yard long!  Here's the manatee!  Also known as "sea cows", these large friendly creatures frequent the three rivers, and will playfully nudge you from underneath while you're swimming.
mantplay.jpg (10056 bytes) turtle.jpg (8401 bytes)
The Ichetucknee manatees are so tame you can dive down and pet them and swim with them.  Because they are so used to human contact, sometimes they are injured when motorboats pass over them and cut their hides with the propellers.  Many of the manatees have deep propeller scars. Tom's closeup of the gopher tortoise trying to cross the road.  When you see one, please, slow down or go around.   They're slow, so do what you can to avoid hurting them--they ARE endangered.
